SHOW ME THE MONEY!

IF you’ve just started university or college you’re probably already experiencing the rapid loss of cash. Don’t worry because help is at hand.

STUDENT'S always have problems managing their finances which is why they have that extra 10% off everywhere they go and dress like tramps and smell all the time. Well that’s what the people at my uni were like, just kidding! The traditional stereotype of students is that they have no money, which is hardly surprising considering the life they lead, all alcohol and no work, just kidding again! No seriously students really do have to live on a budget especially those living out as they have little time to work and often have to support themselves. I know I came out of university with humongous debts that will probably take me a lifetime to pay off.

The trick is to make sure that you really think about what you’re spending your money on. Obvious as this may seem a lot of people don’t realize that there is a lot of help out there for students - its just a matter of looking for it. Even the smallest thing like changing your electricity or gas supplier can make a difference (ok I know I sound like a television advert now). The following sections should help by giving you information on how to manage your finances a bit better.

Banks

Firstly it is important to have a good bank account. Now, you’re probably thinking “what’s the point of having a bank account if I don’t have any money to put in it?” Well that’s not quite the idea. You see most banks offer good deals to students hoping that they will stay with them in the future (when they are finally earning big bucks!).

There are many tempting offers to choose from so make sure you shop around before you make your decision. Don’t choose an account just because they’re giving away a free set of CDs at the time as this is not going to help you in the long run. Choosing the right bank is important as they will be giving you lot’s of money and you need to know they will be patient when it comes to paying it all back!

Below is a list of banks with good student packages; you can check these on line or by popping into your local branch. Have a good chat with your student officer as you will need their help in the future and it helps if you can create a rapport with them.
